This series sits within my ongoing exploration of portraiture as an emotional exchange — an encounter between subject and observer.
Created in collaboration with the Calvert Stables, these works shift my gaze from the human figure to the animal form, while maintaining the same focus on presence, individuality, and inner life.

BUSTER
The Calvert Stables are a place of trust, routine, and mutual care — qualities that naturally informed the atmosphere of this series.

QUEENIE
The collaboration reflects shared values around dignity, sensitivity, and connection.
At the Calvert Trust Stables, horses play a vital role in connection, confidence, and care — forming relationships with riders that go far beyond instruction.

BILLY
The Hearts & Hooves Collection consists of 11 original mixed media paintings, each depicting an individual horse currently resident at the stables.
Each painting is a study of character rather than likeness. I was drawn to subtle gestures — the tilt of the head, the softness of the eye, the quiet tension held in the body.
As with my figurative work, the intention is not to document, but to acknowledge.
A selection of works from this series has been released as limited editions and small-format pieces.
A unique colour palette has been chosen for every horse in the collection. This isn’t only to add visual interest — bold, clearly defined colour helps support visitors and riders with a range of learning needs, including those with:
Stronger colour contrast can make images easier to recognise, enjoy and engage with — especially for people who benefit from visual clarity.
This collection exists as both a portrait series and a gesture of return — recognising the quietlabour of care, and the emotional bonds that often go unseen. It stands as a reminder that portraiture is not limited by species, but by the depth of attention we are willing to give.
